Walkn’Talk

Sunday, 13th September at 7AM. Mooloolaba Spit.

You don’t need to have the right thing to say. You just need to show up and walk.

Come and walk, It’s Free

Eleven at night

You have people around you. You still go a week without saying the true thing.

Every one of them would have listened.

Sitting across a table from someone, holding eye contact and finding the words cold in the middle of a conversation. That is one of the hardest ways to say a true thing.

Most weeks it does not get said at all.

Walking is easier.

The size of it

This is one of the largest health signals we have.

Four numbers, all of them measured, none of them about this walk. They are the reason a free Sunday morning is worth two hours of your life.

0%

of Australians report some form of social disconnection. Loneliness, isolation or both.

Ending Loneliness Together, State of the Nation 2026. 4,001 Australians aged 12 to 95.

0%

are carrying both at once. Lonely and isolated. Roughly one in five people you pass.

greater likelihood of survival for people with stronger social relationships. An effect that rivals smoking as a mortality risk factor.

Physical activity is around one and a half times more effective than counselling or leading medications for depression, anxiety and distress.

Singh et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2023. 97 reviews, 1,039 trials, 128,119 participants.

Moving your body and talking to another human are two of the most evidenced things available to you. This morning is both, at once, for free, in about two hours.

The morning, step by step

Five kilometres, out and back.

Tap any point on the route or press play and let the morning run.

Use the arrow keys once the route has focus  ·  the walk is flat, sealed, pram and dog friendly

What this is

A walk, a conversation and a swim.

There is no program here, no technique to learn and no expectation that you arrive ready to talk about anything at all.

Side by side means you are not facing anyone. Somewhere to look that is not another person’s face. Your body already moving, which tends to loosen what stillness keeps locked.

That is the whole mechanism. The shape of it does the work.

The deeper why

What actually happens when we come together

Connection is a physiological event happening between two bodies and it follows rules you can work with.

Five of them are doing the work on this walk, whether or not anybody names them out loud.

01Side by side takes the load off

Shared gaze

Face to face is high load. Eye contact asks something of you continuously and it comes with an audience. You are asking a nervous system to open while giving it every reason to close.

Walking removes it. Nobody is looking at you. There is somewhere else to put your eyes. Both people are pointed at the same horizon and that small geometric fact does more than any question could.

02The body sets the pace of the conversation

Rhythm, breath, discharge

A steady walking rhythm regulates breathing without anyone having to think about it. Exertion discharges some of what a difficult sentence costs to say. The pace of a conversation ends up matching the pace of the feet, which is why walked conversations rarely spiral.

A braced body says the acceptable version. A regulated body says the real one. You can walk someone into the second state.

03Co-regulation is a two body event

The part nobody puts on a poster

Whether someone opens up depends far less on your question than on what your body does while they answer.

If your own system spikes when someone tells you the truth, they feel it every time. They wrap it up quickly and make it lighter to look after you. That is the reason most people stay closed.

Presence is a physiological state and it can be trained.

04A walk has an ending built into it

Why nothing has to be resolved

The corner is coming. The conversation has a natural edge, which means nobody has to arrive anywhere, fix anything or land on a conclusion before it is time to stop.

That is why hard things get said in cars, on walks and over the washing up. The container ends on its own and everybody knows it.

05Morning light, salt water, other people

Ordinary and measurable

Early light, cold water, exertion and the company of people who are not asking anything of you. Stacked into a single Sunday morning it does more than any one of them does alone.

You would not do it alone. This way you did.

Move the body
Get in the water
Say the true thing
Walk back different

Why this exists

Suicide awareness needs to be raised before it is too late.

Depression, suicide, anxiety, PTSD. All of this is not foreign in our world yet we silence it far too often.

I, Elise, am no stranger to this. I’ve lost friends to suicide over the years and worked with women who have lost their husbands. I have my own personal stories but I’m not here to share a big lengthy journey with you.

This has nothing to do with me and everything to do with a world in isolation, buried deeper and deeper in disconnect.

If you want to know a bit more of my story

Where it all began.

As an 8 year old girl I grew up in a world where I knew I did not belong, a misfit longing to find a circle that felt like people heard me. An unspoken silence grew within me for many years and I could never put my finger on this intensity of rage where I would look at 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 year old me and just want to scream at her. “You’re ugly, I hate you”. You get the point.

This evolved into my teenage years battling the “diagnosis” of major depressive disorder, with suicidal tendency, epileptic fits and psychosis. 14 year old me spent a stint of time in a psych ward, my family visiting on the restricted hours of an hour or so, bringing whatever I wanted to eat, anything to escape the hospital food. I attempted to end my life multiple times. Eating disorders and body dysmorphia followed.

By the age of 18 I gave the drug concoction that my body lived off to “get by” the flick and turned to drugs and alcohol. By the age of 24 I had had enough and found a deep love for running, health and wellness and the studies of the human psyche, body, trauma, breath and beyond. Because eventually self destruction comes to a halt and we are faced with the truth. Well that’s what my pregnancy and 2019 gave me. A pivot and a reality check that turned my whole life upside down and round and round.

I gave birth to my son in 2020 at the beginning of covid lockdown, isolated and only to face separation with a 4 month old bub. Breathwork was the catalyst for change for me. It found me in my darkest of moments and fast forward 6 years on, pair that with a devotion to practice and studying. I have touched the lives of over 1000+ people and growing everyday.

I am the founder of Orygen Breathwork™, a training that develops women to lead their life through breath led practices, so they too can live and breathe this movement out into the world.

I am no stranger to rebuilding my life and at 33 it has only been in the last two years that I have truly rewritten the script on what safety and stability look like. I have lived a full life, just like you.

Through real conversation, said out loud to another person, in movement, breath, connection, outdoors, again and again. It became the thing that moved me rather than the thing I was hiding from.

This walk is that, in its smallest possible form.

I am not running it as a facilitator this time. I am running it as someone for whom this exact thing was the difference.

As I brought this event to life I had a visit from the 14 year old version of me in my own breathwork practice and smothered her with love, time and attention to let her know that she mattered and that her perspective of the world, with no sense of belonging, led us to creating a world, purpose and movement worth living for.

Who this is for

You do not need to be in crisis to come. You do not need to be fine to come either.

Anyone who is tired of the version of themselves that has it together in every conversation.

If you are in the middle of something acute right now, something that needs more than a walk on a Sunday morning, this is not the right place for that. We would rather tell you plainly than have you arrive and not find it.

R U OK? is a charity encouraging everyone to meaningfully connect and lend support to the people in their world who may be struggling with life. For conversation tips and support services information, please visit www.ruok.org.au

This is a walk and a conversation. It is not therapy, not a support group and we are not clinicians. If something is acute right now, please use one of the numbers above. They are better placed than a Sunday morning is.
